BEST TOMATO SANDWICH RECIPES – SUMMER’S BEST SANDWICH
Classic Tomato Sandwich – A childhood favorite that never grows old. Two fresh slices of your favorite bread (toasted if you like), smothered with mayonnaise, topped with thick sliced tomatoes, salt and pepper to taste. Perfection.
Note: After sharing this post yesterday, tons of people left comments on Facebook stating I should use Duke’s mayonnaise, NOT Hellmann’s. I grew up in Michigan and had never heard of Duke’s Mayo, it wasn’t available in stores. I only learned about Duke’s when I started blogging and following southern food bloggers. When I moved to Georgia a few months ago, the first thing on my list was to purchase some Duke’s mayo, to find out what the fuss was all about…and I must say, I prefer Hellmann’s. I’m sure those are some fighting words. Ha!
Tomato Sandwich with Basil Mayonnaise – A five-star Ina Garten recipe (Barefoot Contessa) – read the rave reviews. “One of the most fantastic recipes ever!!! Light, flavorful and so simple.”
Tomato Sandwich with Parsley or Basil – Fresh herbs from the garden take the tomato sandwich up a notch.
Mama’s Best Broiled Tomato Sandwich – An Italian twist with great reviews.
Garlic-Toasted Tomato Sandwich – Garlicky grilled bread with a creamy mix of feta, mayonnaise and chives.
Tomato Provolone Sandwich – Elevated tomato sandwich with melted provolone and tarragon-garlic mayo.
Peanut Butter & Tomato Sandwich – Yes, you read that right – an old school favorite from the Great Depression era. Similar to my grandparents’ favorite Peanut Butter, Lettuce and Mayonnaise Sandwich.
Grilled Tomato & Cheese Sandwich – All you need is a bowl of tomato soup and you have yourself the best comfort meal.
The Best Ever Tomato Sandwich – “The secret to the Best Ever Tomato Sandwich is the special sauce from The Prince of Wales, a neighborhood pub in Farmborough, England.”
Fried Green Tomato Sandwich – This sandwich takes a little work, but worth the effort.

I must add to the mayo debate. I discovered Heinz mayo last year and converted from ONLY ever using best foods brand. I hate miracle whip and I’ve yet to try hellmann’s. And I dont like store brands.also if you have never made a classic tomato pie it is a must try! Mmm mm mm

My husband likes Peanut, Mayonnaise and Tomato.

Tomato sandwiches are great plain or if you put something on it. Yes tomato and peanut butter are great together. I can eat other things on tomato sandwiches but prefer only tomato and Dukes or some kind of mayo, even Miracle Whip on occasion.

In regards to Mayo brand preferences – here in the North east. (Maine specifically), we have CAIN’S Mayo ! I prefer it over Hellmans , Dukes or any other I have tried. It really is more flavorful in my opinion ! That said- I don’t have mayo on my tomato sandwiches ! Butter, S & P for me !

My favorite is vine ripe tomatoes, Hellman’s, sliced dill pickles, fresh lettuce, bacon with some salt and pepper on toasted bread of choice. Nothing says summer more than a toasted tomato sandwich

Wheat bread, mayo, tomato, cheddar cheese, salt, pepper and you got a simply delicious sandwich!
Donna
I love the classic tomato sandwich. I use Hellman’s because that’s what they sell at Costco. I can’t tell any difference between Hellman’s and Dukes.
Susan Dunn
If you don’t love Duke’s, we can’t be friends.

The best tomato sandwich I’ve had this season is bread, Hellman’s, tomato, slice of mozzarella, fresh basil. Delish! I’ve had both Hellman’s (the only mayo I’ve known until a few years ago when Dukes made an appearance here in Texas), and I really can’t tell any difference. I like both, but because of certain ingredients (soybean oil), I only eat avocado mayo which is super expensive. Need to get the nerve to make my own, if I ever find pasteurized eggs.

My breakfast all summer long….low carb toast, caraway havarti cheese, tomato slices and pepper. Always my favoriate! [Sorry, but I love Hellman’s]

I grew up on toasted tomato sandwiches. If the tomatoes were homegrown, the sandwiches were so much better – as with anything made from your garden! We toasted bread, buttered, layered on tomatoes, sprinkled with vinegar, sugar, salt and pepper. So yummy!

I’m with you – I have been a “Hellman’s girl” for 65 years. My favorite tomato sandwich is as follows – toast two slices of any bread, butter both slices and then spread with Hellman’s. Place slices tomatoes all over both slices. Sat & pepper tomatoes. Place in microwave for 30 seconds to heat tomatoes. Cover generously with Muenster cheese and place in microwave for another 30 seconds to melt cheese. Eat with a knife & fork – they are open-faced sandwiches and very yummy. Enjoy!

LOL … your taste buds are formed with the mayo you grew up with …. on in my case, the MW (miracle whip, with 8 children, it was one of mom’s pleasures in life to use real mayo and still have a full jar after one meal. LOL). Yep, I had to develop a taste for mayo after I was an adult and I still prefer MW. I do like Hellman’s when I use mayo. 🙂
