BEST TOMATO SANDWICH RECIPES – SUMMER’S BEST SANDWICH
Classic Tomato Sandwich – A childhood favorite that never grows old. Two fresh slices of your favorite bread (toasted if you like), smothered with mayonnaise, topped with thick sliced tomatoes, salt and pepper to taste. Perfection.
Note: After sharing this post yesterday, tons of people left comments on Facebook stating I should use Duke’s mayonnaise, NOT Hellmann’s. I grew up in Michigan and had never heard of Duke’s Mayo, it wasn’t available in stores. I only learned about Duke’s when I started blogging and following southern food bloggers. When I moved to Georgia a few months ago, the first thing on my list was to purchase some Duke’s mayo, to find out what the fuss was all about…and I must say, I prefer Hellmann’s. I’m sure those are some fighting words. Ha!
Tomato Sandwich with Basil Mayonnaise – A five-star Ina Garten recipe (Barefoot Contessa) – read the rave reviews. “One of the most fantastic recipes ever!!! Light, flavorful and so simple.”
Tomato Sandwich with Parsley or Basil – Fresh herbs from the garden take the tomato sandwich up a notch.
Mama’s Best Broiled Tomato Sandwich – An Italian twist with great reviews.
Garlic-Toasted Tomato Sandwich – Garlicky grilled bread with a creamy mix of feta, mayonnaise and chives.
Tomato Provolone Sandwich – Elevated tomato sandwich with melted provolone and tarragon-garlic mayo.
Peanut Butter & Tomato Sandwich – Yes, you read that right – an old school favorite from the Great Depression era. Similar to my grandparents’ favorite Peanut Butter, Lettuce and Mayonnaise Sandwich.
Grilled Tomato & Cheese Sandwich – All you need is a bowl of tomato soup and you have yourself the best comfort meal.
The Best Ever Tomato Sandwich – “The secret to the Best Ever Tomato Sandwich is the special sauce from The Prince of Wales, a neighborhood pub in Farmborough, England.”
Fried Green Tomato Sandwich – This sandwich takes a little work, but worth the effort.
What’s your favorite tomato sandwich? Please share by leaving a comment, I would love to learn new and old recipes for this summer favorite.
Cheers!

I was brought up in VA. I learned to use Hellman’s. I still do and now that I live in GA, I’ve been fussed at because of my brand choice. The difference is the thickness and “heaviness” of the mayo – as I’ve been told. And honestly, I just don’t care for the “creamy” spread of Dukes. With the price of mayo these days, that can’t even account for the difference. LOL. BUT I am curious as to the publishing of a recipe for a “tomato sandwich” – Make me wonder who can’t figure it out, once they’ve heard of these… bread, mayo, tomato slices, salt if desired… Not a big deal. I don’t think… but then, I’m on the “older” side of life now.

Love these sandwiches! Wait patiently until they are for sale at local fruit/vegetable markets. I think part of it is because you can only get them for a few weeks. Always use a “grainy” bread. Ashamed to admit, sometimes I add a piece of cheese.

I like a crisp lettuce leaf in there. A slice of havarti would go well with that. Now I’m going to crave a tomato sandwich.

Lightly toasted Italian Bread that has been rubbed with a cut garlic clove. Thick slices of tomatoes (type of tomato is your preference ). Slice or two of mozzarella cheese. Drizzle with good balsamic vinegar and EVOO. A leaf or 2 of basil. Salt & pepper to taste. A Caprese Sandwich!

I have just discovered tomato sandwiches, having never heard of them growing up in Pittsburgh. I saw a recipe pop up on my Instagram and decided to try it today. The recipe called for marinating the tomato slices in olive oil, apple cider vinegar and salt and pepper, then adding a splash of the marinade to the Mayo. I’m sure for many of you, adding vinegar to the Mayo would be sacrilegious, but then again, I have heard dukes already has that tang (never tried dukes before). Anyway, Trader Joe’s didn’t have any apple cider vinegar, so I bought raspberry vinegar because it sounded amazing. It made one of the best sandwiches I’ve ever had!!

Only use Duke’s mayo. Best mayo in my opinion. Kraft is to runny for tater salad and egg salad. Never have eaten Hellmann’s. Will stick with my Duke’s and y’all eat whatever y’all like best.
Melanie
Love tomato sandwiches and have to agree – Hellmann’s mayonnaise beats Duke’s.

Sometimes I want Cheese (plain old American cheese) on my tomato sandwich. Mostly I want Sunbeam bread, JFG mayo, salt and thick sliced tomato.

A friend in high school introduced me to adding dried, minced onions to a tomato sandwich (and I prefer Hellman’s or Kraft Mayo also – no Dukes for me!) The minced onions make it so much better!! Try it! ❤️

I love all recipes and new ways to fix my food gives variety of ways to fix one food.

I love tomato sandwiches. I grew up using butter for my sandwich. Finally adapted to using Hellman’s Mayonnaise after a few years in America!
Kimberly
you don’t toast a tomato sandwich
Grammy
Oh yes you do! Down south in Arkansas we toast the bread, spread our choice of mayo on the toast, top with tomatoes, fried strips of bacon, salt, pepper, then top with a leaf of iceberg lettuce!!! DELICIOUS!!!!

That is a BLT, not a Tomato sandwich.
