BEST TOMATO SANDWICH RECIPES – SUMMER’S BEST SANDWICH
Classic Tomato Sandwich – A childhood favorite that never grows old. Two fresh slices of your favorite bread (toasted if you like), smothered with mayonnaise, topped with thick sliced tomatoes, salt and pepper to taste. Perfection.
Note: After sharing this post yesterday, tons of people left comments on Facebook stating I should use Duke’s mayonnaise, NOT Hellmann’s. I grew up in Michigan and had never heard of Duke’s Mayo, it wasn’t available in stores. I only learned about Duke’s when I started blogging and following southern food bloggers. When I moved to Georgia a few months ago, the first thing on my list was to purchase some Duke’s mayo, to find out what the fuss was all about…and I must say, I prefer Hellmann’s. I’m sure those are some fighting words. Ha!
Tomato Sandwich with Basil Mayonnaise – A five-star Ina Garten recipe (Barefoot Contessa) – read the rave reviews. “One of the most fantastic recipes ever!!! Light, flavorful and so simple.”
Tomato Sandwich with Parsley or Basil – Fresh herbs from the garden take the tomato sandwich up a notch.
Mama’s Best Broiled Tomato Sandwich – An Italian twist with great reviews.
Garlic-Toasted Tomato Sandwich – Garlicky grilled bread with a creamy mix of feta, mayonnaise and chives.
Tomato Provolone Sandwich – Elevated tomato sandwich with melted provolone and tarragon-garlic mayo.
Peanut Butter & Tomato Sandwich – Yes, you read that right – an old school favorite from the Great Depression era. Similar to my grandparents’ favorite Peanut Butter, Lettuce and Mayonnaise Sandwich.
Grilled Tomato & Cheese Sandwich – All you need is a bowl of tomato soup and you have yourself the best comfort meal.
The Best Ever Tomato Sandwich – “The secret to the Best Ever Tomato Sandwich is the special sauce from The Prince of Wales, a neighborhood pub in Farmborough, England.”
Fried Green Tomato Sandwich – This sandwich takes a little work, but worth the effort.
What’s your favorite tomato sandwich? Please share by leaving a comment, I would love to learn new and old recipes for this summer favorite.
Cheers!

These all sound great, but my father, the king of tomato sandwiches, devoured at least one every lunch and dinner during fresh tomato season. He would scoff at most of these recipes, declaring that only a thin smear of butter was needed. Only bread, butter, salt and pepper were needed to successfully accompany the delisciousness of your own garden-grown fresh tomato.

Grew up and still live in South Louisiana just outside Baton Rouge. It is Blue Plate or nothing in our house. Duke’s is not all that is cracked up to be and Miracle Whip is salad dressing.

Funny, I moved to Georgia 3 years ago, from Long Island. THOMASVILLE. I prefer Hellman’s also.

I have always eaten toasted bread with real butter and tomato slices. I can’t find anyone else who has. I can’t remember who would have introduced a tomato sandwich made this way, so I am guessing it was my mother, when I was young.

On the west coast Hellmans is called Best Foods. Same mayonaise, the label even looks almost the same. Love tomato sandwiches. They will always remind me of my mother. She used to make them for me to take to school. She always had to pack the tomato slices in a separate baggie or the bread would get soggy.

I also tried dukes mayo just recently and found I liked Hellman’s better!

I grew up in Georgia. My parents were raised in Alabama. My mother always used Blue Plate or 2nd choice, Kraft. One time my Dad went to the store to get a few things. He brought home Dukes. We were not crazy about it. Since then I have used Hellmans, Blue Plate and Kraft. I am good with those there and usually get which one is the best price. It’s not true about what they say on commercials “all good southern cooks use Dukes”. I don’t understand what the fuss is about, but I guess it’s what you get used to.

I grew up in Connecticut and we only had Hellmanns mayonaise at our house. Tomato and mayo sandwiches were a staple as were grilled cheese sandwiches. Today, I only buy Hellmanns.
