Today’s share is my favorite drink from childhood, a sentimental mocktail my grandparents ordered for the grandkids when we had special dinners out at a restaurant – Shirley Temple.
SHIRLEY TEMPLE RECIPE (MOCKTAIL)
Shirley Temple – a fun and fancy old-fashioned, non-alcoholic mocktail made with lemon-lime soda, grenadine and garnished with maraschino cherries. This delicious, easy to make childhood favorite is perfect for special occasions, holidays and more – loved by all ages.
I passed on this special drink to my two girls and they still order them today. With everything going on and not being able to visit our favorite restaurants the last seven months, I have been trying to do special things at home to lift spirits. When I made Shirley Temples there were lots of big smiles. We’ve made these a few times over the months. And according to my oldest, a recent college grad and of legal drinking age, adding a splash of vodka to her Shirley Temple was delicious (aka, Dirty Shirley)!
What You Need to Make a Shirley Temple
Lemon-lime soda like Sprite or 7-Up (some people like to use ginger ale or a half & half mixture of lemon-lime soda and ginger ale), Grenadine, maraschino cherries to garnish and ice.
Type of Glasses to Use For a Shirley Temple
Growing up in the 70s and 80s in Michigan, most of our Shirley Temples were served in rocks glasses. They were even more special if they arrived at the table garnished with a plastic sword pick with a thin slice of orange and a maraschino cherry in the middle. You can use any glass to serve a Shirley Temple, at home we like to use our mason jar glasses.
*When we went out to dinner, my grandpa would order Crown Royal on the rocks. I think back in the day he may have requested the same rocks glass for our Shirley Temples. I remember feeling so grown up and special with that fancy drink in my hand – it’s one of my favorite, sentimental memories from childhood. Our girls’ drinks growing up were usually served in a regular glass or a plastic kid cup. Not the same, but as long as there were maraschino cherries…they were special.

Yes, very popular kid’s drink, and a “Roy Roger’s” is the same thing made with cola.
