FAMOUS BUTTER CHICKEN (AKA, RITZ CRACKER CHICKEN)
The chicken is so tender, moist and juicy. One of the easiest, tastiest chicken breast recipes I have made. I love when a recipe only has a few ingredients but still delivers on taste. I am excited to be adding this to my recipe box on Sweet Little Bluebird, you’ll want to add it to your recipe box too.
Note: Not to be confused with the popular Indian dish, Butter Chicken – one of my favorites.

WHAT YOU NEED TO MAKE FAMOUS BUTTER CHICKEN (AKA, RITZ CRACKER CHICKEN)
To make this chicken all you need are four boneless, skinless chicken breasts, 2 eggs, Ritz crackers, garlic salt and pepper. You can easily adapt the flavor by using your favorite seasonings.
HOW TO MAKE FAMOUS BUTTER CHICKEN (AKA, RITZ CRACKER CHICKEN)
Simply dip the chicken in eggs, then dredge in the cracker crumbs and place in a 9×13 baking dish that has been lightly sprayed with non-stick cooking spray. Last, top chicken evenly with pieces of butter.
NOTE: For this dinner, I needed to bake one chicken breast separate for my daughter with an egg allergy. Instead of dipping the breast in eggs, I dipped it in plain yogurt and then the cracker crumbs, baking it in a small baking dish. She absolutely loved it! She ate the whole chicken breast, which was shocking because she usually eats like a bird.
Bake on middle rack of oven (pre-heated at 375 degrees F) for 40 to 45 minutes or until chicken breasts reach a safe minimum 165 degree F internal temperature.
Famous Butter Chicken (aka, Ritz Cracker Chicken)
- 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
- 2 eggs, beaten
- 1 cup crushed Ritz crackers or similar butter crackers
- 1/2 cup butter, cut into pieces
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic salt
- pepper to taste
Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Lightly spray a 9×13 baking dish with non-stick cooking spray.
*The recipe calls for placing the butter around the chicken, but I opted to place the butter on top of the chicken – it turned out wonderful! Add your favorite poultry seasonings for extra flavor (garlic/onion powder and more).
Could I use Soda crackers if I dint have the othere ones?
I found this recipe about two years ago. After that first time my husband stated this was THE best chicken he ever had and why wasn’t I making chicken this way all along? We’d been married for 39 years at that point. I asked him why HE hadn’t been making it that way…🤭
That’s what I was wondering too, Kelley. Next time I will try airfrying one piece before baking the rest. I like adding some sweet coconut to the cracker mixture. Gives it a nice sweet taste!
Is unsalted butter best to use? Wondering how salty it turns out with regular butter?
You can use unsalted butter – you can salt after baking to your liking, Jennifer.
My family loves this. Sometimes I bake, sometimes I try. I use Townhouse crackers. It is absolutely delicious.
I’m going to try it with crushed salsa sun chips.
Would it be just as good with wheat flavored Ritz?
This is DELICIOUS! First time I made it exactly as the recipe directs. The second time I added sweet flaked coconut to the cracker crumbs! It was great!
Hi! Would this recipe work with thick cut pork chops?
That’s how I make my fried pork chops. I brown them on the stove first – then put them into the over.
Can I make it with chicken tenders ?
Yes you can, Angie!
I have tried butter chicken recipe with ghee instead of butter. Now you may ask how to use ghee? Ghee is used here as a butter replacement. The result is a tasty chicken dish with additional ghee flavor. I have used best quality grass-fed ghee.

I love cooking with high quality Ghee!!!
My husband and I are absolutely obsessed with this butter chicken recipe. I’ve made several times now and every time has been delicious. I’ve told my family n friends about it as well. Can’t wait to hear what they have to say. Thanks so much for this recipe. If your debating on whether or not to make this , let me tell u , u will not be disappointed. It will be a family favorite for sure.
This is a delicious and easy to make recipe. The only change I make is I dredge the breasts in flour, then into the beaten egg and then into the Ritz cracker crumb mixture. It makes great leftovers and goes well with rice, potatoes or buttered noodles. If the breasts are big I slice them horizontally into two thinner pieces. Definitely put this recipe into your rotation!
I use ritz crackers to bread haddock and pan fry it. It is also very tasty!
We called it cracker chicken growing up. We used the butter to dip the chicken in before coating! No eggs!
I’ve made this for years. I don’t use the egg. I dip in buttermilk or melted butter.
We grew up calling it Ritzy Chicken. It’s a favorite in our family.
I made this chicken for dinner tonight and it was a hit!! I also placed the pats of butter on top of the chicken and it helped crisp the coating. The chicken was so moist! Definitely will make this again! Thank you for sharing your recipe.
Since it’s a gazillion degrees outside everywhere right now, I wonder if you could do this in the air fryer?
I butterflied two large chicken breasts and cooked it according to instructions. It came out burnt but still good. Next time I will only bake for 30 minutes and maybe even flip the chicken breast half way through.
Can the recipe be made from frozen chicken, cooked longer??
Can this recipe be made with skin on bone in chicken breasts? How long should they be in the oven?
What would be the cooking time if using thighs?
Can you use chicken legs and thighs
Hi! Did you ever try using the legs and thighs? I see good questions but no answers ☹️ my dad likes dark meat. Guess I’ll give it a try
Ronda, you can use thighs, legs…just make sure the chicken is cooked thoroughly.
This is a delicious recipe. We all love it. I have a granddaughter with an egg allergy like your daughter. I dip the seasoned chicken into melted butter and then the crumbs. It’s tender and delicious and now that’s my husband’s favorite way to have it.
