Yes, you read that right…Peanut Butter, Mayonnaise and Lettuce Sandwich. How can something that sounds so wrong, taste so right.
(Often made with Miracle Whip instead instead of mayonnaise – my personal favorite)
I grew up on this and haven’t had one since I was about 10 years old. This was one of my grandparents’ favorite sandwiches. I was told this sandwich was born during the Great Depression and became a family favorite.
I did a little research and found a great list of meals on The Survival Mom, that were born during the Great Depression. It’s a fun read.
What strange family food did you grow up with?
This afternoon I took a trip down memory lane and made one. It was pretty darn good, but could never compare to the ones made in my grandparents’ kitchen.
Thanks so much for stopping by!
Cheers!

I grew up eating Peanut Butter and Mayo Sandwiches. But this is the first time I have heard of it with Lettuce. I will have to give it a try sometime. My Mamma grew up eating Peanut Butter and Mayo Sandwiches, she lived through part of the depression. Some wonderful recipes from all over the world sprang from the Great Depression and not just from America.

One of my favorite sandwiches is peanut butter, pickle relish, onion and mayo. So much better than it sounds! I love it.

My mom used to eat peanut butter and mayo sandwiches (no lettuce) when I was a kid. I never tried it and it still doesn't appeal to me. However after seeing this I guess she is not as crazy as I thought. I'll stick with peanut butter and dill pickles.

That's funny. I just found your link to this all these years later. My fave after school snack was grape jelly on saltines–salt and sweet thing. My 87 yr. old mom just informed me they used to eat onion sandwiches in the depression. I frankly find that amazing since I never knew her to eat and onion on anything and she hates mayo. I guess it was lettuce and onion. lol

My dad has my 2 sons hooked on peanut butter and cole slaw sandwiches. Haven't been brave enough to try one ;). He doesn't eat meat therefore he has tried and contines to eat crazy things paired with PB….

I never thought of lettuce, but I also added Cheez Whiz to mine, my favorite all time sandwich. I haven't had one in years, but I just got a hankering.

I laughed out loud when I saw this sandwich! When I was a kid, and too young to read, I thought that the Miracle Whip in our fridge was Marshmallow Fluff! I've told people how I made PB and "Fluff" sandwiches and they laughed at me! Now I can tell them that I was just carrying on a tradition! LOL on them!

In out house it was peanut butter, tomato and mayo sandwiches. Lol. My dad and I still swear by them but the rest aren't brave enough to try.

When I was a kid I ate sandwiches made from Miracle Whip and lettuce or just bread & Miracle Whip. I'd also make cooked wagon wheel pasta and tomato sauce heated together. Who needs fancyou when simple is yummt!

Peanut butter, cheese, bologna, and apple are great together!

I heard about peanut butter dill pickle sandwiches through reading Kinsey Milhone mysteries. They're good with pb and bread and butter pickles, too. One try and I was a believer.

Growing up we had either tomato and mayo sandwiches or peanut butter, marshmallow fluff and banana between 2 pieces of bread then grilled/fried…..soooooo yummy!

Cream cheese and jam with a dill pickle slice, a couple of salt and vinegar chips, or sprinkled with salt if you don't have those. Try it!

I used to eat American cheese and grape jelly sandwiches as a kid. I also liked applesauce on bread, but it was definitely not finger food!
I love BLTs with mayo, but now I'm tempted to try one with PB!

Pb and salami on toast. Yum

I probably won't be trying this anytime soon but I don't think it's all that weird. I grew up watching my brother eat peanut butter and pickle sandwiches and my father eating peanut butter and onion. I don't like pickles but tried the onion once. I prefer honey or homemade jelly.
