Oven-Fried Bacon – How To Make Perfect Bacon in the Oven

Oven-Fried Bacon…the only way I will make bacon in the future. Perfectly cooked, crispy bacon, without all the mess and cleanup – so simple to make!

I don’t make bacon often because of the mess it makes all over me, my stove and walls. After visiting my sister in Alaska, I no longer dread making bacon. She, like many others, cooks her bacon in the oven and has been making it this way for over 20 years.

For this Sunday brunch we made Applewood-Smoked Bacon  – my favorite!

As of today, I no longer fear and dread the mess of making bacon. When we have our next Sunday brunch, I promise to have a plate full of perfect crispy bacon on the table.

***ALWAYS BE VERY CAREFUL WITH BACON GREASE – REMOVE SLOWLY AND USE LONG OVEN MITTS  TO COVER HANDS AND ARMS WHEN PULLING OUT OF OVEN ***

    Directions
    • *Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.
    • Place oven rack in center of oven. Lay slices of bacon side-by-side in a single layer in a pan with a lip- jelly roll pan, roasting pan, cookie sheet. If you are cooking a lot of bacon, it’s okay for the bacon slices to slightly over lap (see second above). For easier clean-up, you can line your pan with foil.
    • Cook for approximately 15 to 20 minutes and then check your bacon. If cooking thin slices of bacon, check sooner, between 10 to 12 minutes. Cooking times will vary depending on the thickness of your bacon and how crispy you like it. If necessary and for even cooking, you may need to flip your bacon once using tongs- this depends on the thickness of the bacon.
    • Once bacon is golden brown and has reached desired crispness, remove with tongs and place on platter lined with paper towel. Enjoy!

***ALWAYS BE VERY CAREFUL WITH BACON GREASE – REMOVE SLOWLY AND USE LONG OVEN MITTS  TO COVER HANDS AND ARMS WHEN PULLING OUT OF OVEN ***

    Cleanup
Allow grease to cool. Never pour bacon grease down the drain. Pour cooled grease in a heat-proof container and refrigerate to save for cooking later or discard in trash. If using foil, allow the grease to solidify and then gently fold and toss in trash.

    Tips
    • *Some methods for cooking bacon in the oven say NOT to preheat the oven, others say to preheat the oven. My sister has tried both methods over the years and prefers to preheat.
    • Be sure to keep an eye on your bacon while cooking. Once it starts to brown, it can go from crispy to burned fast.
    • For a quicker clean-up, you can line your baking pan.
    • If you are cooking thin slices of bacon, check your bacon sooner, between 10 to 12 minutes. You will most likely not need to flip the bacon.

**Many people have left comments on Facebook stating for even less mess, reduce your oven temp to 350 degrees F.   I reduced the temperature as recommended while staying in cabin rental over the holidays  – there was zero mess.  Zero.  The bacon took a little longer to cook, but turned out perfect. At home I cook bacon at 400 degrees. without any issues.  Each oven cooks differently, If you notice a lot of splatter, try reducing your oven temp.

I've been cooking bacon this way for a long time now. I line a pan with foil first, sprinkle my raw bacon with onion powder or granules, and always save my bacon grease afterward for cooking other meals. It adds amazing flavor! Oh,and I set my oven to 375 degrees, and use a timer!

I'm curious, don't you have bacon grease pop all over the oven and have a big mess to clean up?

I bake my bacon always to cook all the fat out in my gas oven or microwave convection oven. I place a cake cooling rack in the bottom of the pan that I use and lay the bacon on top of it so that the grease drips in the bottom and not saturate my bacon. I love how it evenly cooks.

I bought a jerky pan at Bass Pro shop and make bacon on it in the oven! Works great and if you line the pan with foil EASY clean-up!

I always sprinkle a mixture of seasoned salt, black pepper & cayenne pepper on my bacon – SO much flavor. I have also mixed brown sugar & cayenne pepper together – you can tell I like spicy! Thanks for all the ideas.

I have cooked my bacon in the oven for years but don't bother with racks or foil. I simply cook it in my largest cast iron skillet
Easy to clean, keeps the skillet well seasoned, and when the bacon's done the skillet is all prepped for eggs!

I like to put the bacon on a wire rack in the pan as it cooks! Keeps the bacon less greasy.

I cook mine in a NuWave and never have to flip it. Thick bacon, 350 degrees for 10 minutes. I like it because you can see it cooking and can turn it off whenever you like. Comes out PERFECT!!

I spray my broiler pan with Pam before baking the bacon. Doesn't stick. When I can afford it, I buy the Nonstick Reynold's Wrap. As an aside, I learned from people who worked at our local Salvation Army years ago, the best way to make hamburgers, other than on a grill, is to put the patties in a roasting pan on a 350 degree oven. Season; bake for 10 minutes; season, and then bake 10 minutes longer, depending on the thickness of the burgers.

another idea is to sort of "inchworm" the bacon on the cookie sheet. So i sort of scrunch the bacon up so it has several humps. Probably gives the same result as using a cooling rack in the pan, but is one less thing to wash. I love oven bacon.

Love all the different ways to season oven cooked bacon. I will be trying some of these next time I prepare bacon.

I line my pan with parchment paper that goes up on the sides to catch all the grease. When done, drain the grease into an old coffee can, throw out the parchment paper and put your pan right back in the cupboard. It should be completely cooled off and clean. So easy, I never fry on top of the stove. Been doing this way for a couple years now and will never go back to the old way of doing it.

I Crack eggs on the baking sheet 5 minutes before the bacon is ready for perfect over easy eggs. Sometimes put cherry tomatoes halves on there as well. Generally this is my breakfast every single day.

Oven bacon is the best. I do a little twist on mine though. I will get thick cut bacon and place it on the bottom rack with a tray underneath to catch the fat. Then I turn on the broiler and leave the door cracked. once the bacon is ready to turn I flip it and put fresh cracked pepper on it with some powdered maple sugar. Just a little maple sugar though. Once all the fat is rendered and the bacon is crispy I pull it out and let it sit for what seems like an eternity. That's about a minute and a half in the bacon world. It literally melts in your mouth and the fresh cracked pepper with the maple taste makes it so amazing. I recommend trying this at least once.

Always cook mine in oven. I put aluminum foil down first. The oven is the onky way to cook bacon.

I worked at a state inn in late 60's, learned to cook bacon by baking it on a wire rack in a lipped cookie sheet. You cook it as long as you want for soft or crispy bacon WITHOUT all the grease. (and no sticking)
