OLD-FASHIONED HOT FUDGE SUNDAE CAKE (aka, Chocolate Cobbler, Hot Fudge Pudding Cake)
Read great reviews from people on Pinetrest!
The cake is mixed and baked all in one pan using ingredients you likely have on hand in your kitchen.
This isn’t the prettiest cake, but it’s darn good.
The top of the cake has a brownie-like, chewy texture. Once you dig in, the bottom is oozing with a thick warm fugdy, pudding-like sauce.
This is wonderful served over ice cream – hence the name, Hot Fudge Sundae Cake.
HOW TO MAKE HOT FUDGE SUNDAE CAKE
To make, you mix everything in a baking dish following these simple steps:
First, mix the first set of dry ingredients well using a fork (flour, sugar, unsweetened cocoa, baking powder and salt), then add milk, vanilla and oil – mix until smooth and spread batter evenly in pan.
Next, sprinkle the top of the cake batter with brown sugar and additional unsweetened cocoa.
Last, pour very hot water over top (do NOT mix) and bake on middle rack of oven at 350 degrees (pre-heated) for about 40 minutes. That’s it!

I think less water would make it better I was expecting a fudgy sauce and this was more like chocolate flavored water
Mary Neumann
The sauce should be a little thick, Gloria. This cherished Betty Crocker Recipe has been around since the 60s or 70s, maybe even longer.

My family has been making this recipe for at least 50 years. Instead of hot water we use strong hot coffee. This cake never fails. Thanks for sharing.
Debra Bush
Made this today for my 17 year olds birthday and it turned out amazing! Easy to make, thank you for sharing!

Wasted my time and most especially my money on these ingredients to make this dessert. I was nervous about putting boiling water on top but I did it. Proceeded to bake as directed and then looked. The water was floating on top. Added more bake time….still floating water. Finally I dumped some of the water off which took some of the chocolate chips with it and added another minute. This time I just removed it from the oven. The cake portion is hard, probably from over cooking and it just tastes overall ….bad. Now I’m stuck with all this buttermilk .
Mary Neumann
Hi Lynn, I am not sure what went wrong for you, so sorry to hear. This cherished Betty Crocker recipe has been around since at least the 1950s, loved by so many. I am not sure what you mean with buttermilk and chocolate chips – buttermilk and chocolate chips are not in this recipe. Are you sure you have the correct recipe and blog/site?
Laurie
Why don’t you post recipes that can be printed. I’m not gonna stop and make this cake right this minute. I would love to be able to print it and make it later thanks
Mary Neumann

Wonder how this would work in a crockpot.
Wanda Gann Muir
Andera, I think it could. It said it was also filed under Egg less Cake and Crockpot Hot Fudge Cake. I have had it and it was made in the crockpot. I thought it was one of the best things I’ve ever tasted.
