THROWBACK THURSDAY…
BUTTERED SALTINE CRACKERS – OLD SCHOOL SNACK
Today is a fun trip down memory lane thinking about my grandpa and one of his favorite salty treats – Saltine crackers smeared with butter or margarine.
My sister and I were talking about one of my grandfather’s favorite snacks a few weeks ago, buttered saltines. I remember them being one of my grandpa’s favorite afternoon snacks, along with Cheez-it crackers. Once in a blue moon he would top his buttered saltines with sardines. My sister remembers smoked oysters too. So my question is, DID YOU GROW UP ON THIS? How did you eat yours?
Since this is a throwback post, please share your favorite old school snacks…especially the strange ones. 🙂

I was snacking on the saltines and butter last week. I thought it was just our household that did this !!! Surprised to see it on the internet!!

What happened to the plain premium crackers the green border box. I know a few of my friends are looking for them and me. The stores only have saltines.

Butter and jam on saltine crackers is my absolute favourite! Definitely more butter than jam but that salty sweet snack is still one of my favourites to this day!

My dad used to eat saltines like this when I was growing up. For some reason I thought of them today and am snacking on them now. Still as good as I remember!

I still enjoy buttered saltines from time to time, but my recollection is them with a 1/4 slice of American Cheese toasted under the broiler on the range.

I sure did eat buttered crackers! MY grandmother also made me peanut butter and jelly sandwiches by buttering the bread first, then the peanut butter, THEN the jelly! DELISH!

Hi Mary,
I’m Jennifer, We would eat buttered crackers often and I still do! I grew up with my daddy raising a large garden, and sometimes after school, before supper was ready, we go get raw veggies from the garden! Raw sweet corn, green beans, tomatoes, peas, all kinds.. they were the best! My daddy would eat pickles and cake and/or ice cream.
He told us stories about how he wanted mustard on his oats, but his parents wouldn’t let him. It was in the depression, so I guess they didn’t want them wasted.

We would eat saltines with mayonnaise on them for a snack! Sometimes we’d make a sandwich with the mayo in the middle; other times we’d eat just the mayo on one saltine. They were so very good! We didn’t have Miracle Whip at that time, just mayonnaise. I’ve since tried it with Miracle Whip, but it just wasn’t as good!

Graham crackers with homemade frosting! Momma always made this for our grade school class parties and when it was our turn to bring treats to Brownies/Girl Scouts

Yes I ate buttered saltines for a snack–dipped into a glass of cold milk.

Butter on my saltines is still a favorite go to snack. But then I’m 71 so probably old enough to
Be your grandma. It’s wonderful with a chink if cheddar on it. Maybe I’ll go get some now. Thanx for the reminder

Something kind of similar that I learned from my mother in law is to mix creamy peanut butter with softened butter and eat it on crackers/saltines. It becomes so deliciously smooth and decadent tasting.
Marcia Mayo
Yes, I eat buttered crackers. My husband thinks I am strange eating Peanut Butter & butter sandwiches or peanut butter & miracle whip sandwiches
Kathy
Add lettuce to your peanut butter and miracle whip sandwich. Yummy!

Oh I grew up with butter or oleo on salted crackers and still eat them today in my late 70’s. If I’m having any kind of soup be it fancy or simple, I’ll have 5 buttered salted crackers ( not called saltines here ) on the ready to have with my soup.. Four crackers are crushed into the soup, one is eaten as is.
Another childhood favourite I knew nothing about until visiting a great auntie at age 7 was being introduced to creamed white honey from a local bee keeper which Auntie spread on hot toast and butter for us. She also introduced my sibling and I to Maple Butter on toast which was delicious.
My sibling and I being war children from England and our War bride Mother, sandwiches consisting of chips ( frites or french fries ) and a sprinkle of malt vinegar between buttered bread slices were on a normal rotation.. And.. how could I forget dear old Dad frying up homemade bread slices crispy brown in bacon fat to go with our bacon and eggs breakfast!

I remember eating saltines with butter but the butter had to be cold! But, even better was saltines and peanutbutter. Even better than that was saltines and peanutbutter and honey As an adult .I have been eating saltines with peanutbutter and maple syrup! My most favorite of all. I don’t do it often though because of the calories but it is a nice treat now and then.

I still eat butter on crackers. The best way is put a stick in the freezer to let it get really cold then put that on the cracker….yum yum yum
