THROWBACK THURSDAY…
BUTTERED SALTINE CRACKERS – OLD SCHOOL SNACK
Today is a fun trip down memory lane thinking about my grandpa and one of his favorite salty treats – Saltine crackers smeared with butter or margarine.
My sister and I were talking about one of my grandfather’s favorite snacks a few weeks ago, buttered saltines. I remember them being one of my grandpa’s favorite afternoon snacks, along with Cheez-it crackers. Once in a blue moon he would top his buttered saltines with sardines. My sister remembers smoked oysters too. So my question is, DID YOU GROW UP ON THIS? How did you eat yours?
Since this is a throwback post, please share your favorite old school snacks…especially the strange ones. 🙂

It’s so funny seeing these snacks as I’ve Had A LOT of them growing up ( yes,in Michigan. Also my dad would eat PB and Miracle whip Sandwiches, which I also ate. They were actually pretty good. One of my fav after school snacks was pickled bologna that we would get from KY when we visited in summer every year. It came in gallon glass jar and was one big long curled up tube. Was yummy with a slice of Velveeta cheese on Ritz or Saltine crackers. And when I had buttered saltines I sprinkled sugar on them. YUM!!

Sometimes I went to my grandmother’s after school. She use to spread sour cream on toast and sprinkle it liberally with brown sugar. So yummy!
MajB
yes- buttered crackers, sardines on saltines and smoked oysters on Ritz, butter & honey or honey & peanut butter, mixed together on saltines, cinnamon toast or regular toast torn to pieces with milk over it for ‘milk toast’, sourdough bread (better still, garlic sourdough) grilled with one side of the slices of bread buttered, the other side with a thin spread of mayo, a slice of cheddar, co-jack or American cheese and very thin slices of dill pickle, and bet few of you snacked on this one: pickled pigs feet with saltines-my grandfather liked those and I tried it of course- wasn’t bad. Plain tomato sandwiches with a smear of mayo are not bad if with fresh garden tomatoes with bread or toast, but I wasn’t up for trying my mother-in-law’s sliced onion sandwiches, or the grilled peanut butter, mayo and pickle ones a friend from Michigan touted- not sure if he got onto that back there as a kid or if he picked it up while on military service- same with peanut butter, mayo and banana ones– I am not that crazy about peanut butter in some things anyway (never cared for a pjb) although a toasted peanut butter sandwich is ok, or fruit preserves alone is fine, and peanut butter on a tart apple like Granny Smith, or a stick of celery is a fine snack- or peanut butter cookies – but not ice cream, even with chocolate added.

Fry them with butter. Yummy.
Tahnee
I remember putting cheese on my tortilla chips and microwaving till cheese melted and added salsa or hot sauce to it. Best snack.

Hi Mary, I saw a post on this last week and it was titled as a “New Snack.” Well, most of us had to disagree. Growing up, our mom did something a little different. She added sandwich spread (a thick Thousand Island flavored spread) to crackers. We love these snacks, too.
Years later, my mother-in-law taught me a new thing with buttered crackers. She added them to Cream of Tomato Soup. Yum!
By the way, your Cherrios post led me to this post and I’ll have to give those a try someday.
Thanks for sharing,
~Rosie

Hi Rosie – I saw the post you are talking about after a few people reached out to let me know the site was using my photo without permission (this happens a lot when a post/photo does well – they like to divert traffic to their site). It’s definitely not a new snack that’s all the craze, but it is a sentimental, old school one to many of us. Thanks for sharing, I love hearing all the different stories. So many people shared they grew up buttering their saltines for tomato soup! My grandpa just liked a lot of butter with a little bit of cracker. 🙂

Chesse whizz or brick cheese and melted in the microwave was our favorite!
