BEST TOMATO SANDWICH RECIPES – SUMMER’S BEST SANDWICH
Classic Tomato Sandwich – A childhood favorite that never grows old. Two fresh slices of your favorite bread (toasted if you like), smothered with mayonnaise, topped with thick sliced tomatoes, salt and pepper to taste. Perfection.
Note: After sharing this post yesterday, tons of people left comments on Facebook stating I should use Duke’s mayonnaise, NOT Hellmann’s. I grew up in Michigan and had never heard of Duke’s Mayo, it wasn’t available in stores. I only learned about Duke’s when I started blogging and following southern food bloggers. When I moved to Georgia a few months ago, the first thing on my list was to purchase some Duke’s mayo, to find out what the fuss was all about…and I must say, I prefer Hellmann’s. I’m sure those are some fighting words. Ha!
Tomato Sandwich with Basil Mayonnaise – A five-star Ina Garten recipe (Barefoot Contessa) – read the rave reviews. “One of the most fantastic recipes ever!!! Light, flavorful and so simple.”

Tomato Provolone Sandwich – Elevated tomato sandwich with melted provolone and tarragon-garlic mayo.
Peanut Butter & Tomato Sandwich – Yes, you read that right – an old school favorite from the Great Depression era. Similar to my grandparents’ favorite Peanut Butter, Lettuce and Mayonnaise Sandwich.
Grilled Tomato & Cheese Sandwich – All you need is a bowl of tomato soup and you have yourself the best comfort meal.
The Best Ever Tomato Sandwich – “The secret to the Best Ever Tomato Sandwich is the special sauce from The Prince of Wales, a neighborhood pub in Farmborough, England.”

I grew up in Pittsburgh and used Hellman’s and loved it. When we moved to the South I had to use Duke’s. You could not find any other brand. Now you can buy both so I bought some Hellman’s when it was on special. We decided we liked Duke’s better, but it was almost a tie.

It doesn’t really matter what mayo you choose, all long as its not miracle whip, that stuff us nasty. Try a tomato sandy on toasted bread. Sometimes I use ketchup, pickles and mustard also. Its still a tomato sandwich with tons of bacon…right? Rofl

two comments one about the sandwich and one about the Mayo…
I love tomato sandwiches.. and they only get better with the addition of bacon and lettuce. as for the Mayo I used to use Duke’s because it WAS better than Helmann’s then I don’t know what happened they changed their recipe or something and it just wasn’t the same.. so i switched to Hellman’s.. it is just better now..

Not sure, if I like tomatoes and mayo… But if you ask me about what mayo I prefer I will say that I don’t buy it at all. Even if I like it a lot. I use homemade mayo. And it’s easy-peasy to make it at home. And you can choose if you like it saltier, sweeter or sourer. You just need (all fresh and all same temperature): an egg, 200 ml of oil (olive, sunflower – any kind you like), salt, sugar (both as much as you prefer), mustard (I think, it’s optional, but I like to add it) and (to your taste) 1 tablespoon of lemon juice (or vinegar). And mix it all with a simple blender. This will take only seconds.

“Miracle Whip” is salad dressing, not a mayonnaise!

I grew up with what my mom called “English grilled cheese”. Its basically a grilled cheese sandwich but shar added a big slice of tomato and a hamburger to it before cooking it. I still make this for my kids. SO YUMMY!

I agree – Hellmann’s Is best. When I was a kid in CA ((I’m almost 83) we had Best Foods mayonnaise which I think is also Hellmann’s. I love my tomato and mayonnaise sandwich with slices of raw onions.

Would you mind sharing what brand of bread you used for the tomato sandwich?

I like the classic tomato sandwich. I love Hellmanns the most. I never tried Dukes. Miracle Whip is too tangy for my taste.

One of my tomato sandwich favorite is grilled cheese tomato and raw onion. I use miracle whip for all my sandwiches.
Kathy
I grew up with the Miracle Whip version but my family sometimes added a slice of cheese and/or sweet onion.

I love Miracle Whip. But my son actually loves JFG Mayo. It’s in Walmart, that’s the only place I’ve seen it. If we can afford it, we will get Hellman’s for him. Mayo is expensive.

My favorite tomato sandwich is just tomato and cheese with salt and pepper and I’ve ate them ever since I was a little girl.

My daughter is a vegetarian and absolutely loves grilled cheese sandwiches with tomato and pickle. She ate them at Sonic so often, she was recognized instantly.

If living in LA, (lower Alabama) or most southern states try Blue Plate Mayonnaise. Was sold on it the first time I tried it. Was previously using Kraft Mayonnaise and what a taste awakening experience after trying Blue Plate. I have never worked for the company that makes Blue Plate not any of my friends or relatives. My only thought is that it’s made in Louisiana so it’s only natural for it to appeal to southern tastes.

Hi! I’m Marion Connolly, 78 yr old Brooklyn NY native. Tomato sandwiches were our go to food, whenever money was scarse in the ‘50s.. Hellman’s was and is still our mayonnaise of choice. . Our tomato sandwiches kept us well fed. Still love them today.

I was born in GA; grew up in GA; and still live in GA. However, I LOVE Hellman’s! It was my mom’s go to mayo, and I have tried Dukes but do not like Dukes at all!!! Give me Hellman’s any day!!
