Today’s tried and true recipe is a delicious, quick and easy dessert that’s so simple to make with only 4 Ingredients – Black Forest Cobbler!
Black Forest Cobbler (aka, Chocolate Cherry Dump Cake and Black Forest Dump Cake)
If you’re a fan of black forest cake (chocolate cherry cake), this twist on cobbler is a must-try! Made with just 4 simple ingredients – chocolate cake mix, cherry pie filling, butter and chocolate chips. Only minutes to throw together, this dump and bake dessert is ooey gooey, chocolate cherry heaven. Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top for an absolutely delicious treat.
What You Need To Make Black Forest Cobbler
A box of Devil’s Food cake mix, 2 cans of cherry pie filling (21 ounces each), 3/4 cup of melted butter and 1/2 cup chocolate chips (optional) – that’s all you need. This is best served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top – a must!
How To Make Black Forest Cobbler
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Spray a 9″x 13″ glass baking dish with non-stick cooking spray. Evenly spread both cans of cherry pie filling in baking dish. Sprinkle dry cake mix over cherry pie filling, spreading evenly. Last, slowly pour melted butter evenly over dry cake mix, covering most of the dry mix (see tip below). Sprinkle chocolate chips evenly on top (optional).
Bake on middle rack of oven for 40-45 minutes. The cobbler is ready when edges of the baking dish are bubbling and top is baked.
CHOCOLATE CHERRY DUMP CAKE
This dessert is from Betty Crocker. Betty calls the recipe “Chocolate Cherry Dump Cake” – to me it’s more like a cobbler even though you use cake mix. The top is not cakey, it has a brownie like topping with an ooey gooey cherry bottom layer. The addition of chocolate chips are optional and not called for in the original recipe. To me, chocolate chips takes this already great recipe up a notch if you’re a chocolate lover.

Black Forest Cobbler (aka, Chocolate Cherry Dump Cake and Black Forest Dump Cake)
Recipe from Betty Crocker, 3-Ingredient Chocolate Cherry Dump Cake
Ingredients
- 1 box Devil’s Food cake mix
- 2 cans (21 ounces each) cherry pie filling
- 3/4 cup butter, melted (1 1/2 sticks)
- 1/2 cup chocolate chips (optional)
Directions
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Spray a 9″x 13 ” glass baking dish with non-stick cooking spray.
Evenly spread both cans of cherry pie filling in baking dish (check for cherry pits to be safe).
Allow to cool for 10 minutes – serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top….enjoy!
Store in fridge up to 3 days.
Tips
After evenly pouring the melted butter on top, I use a spoon to try to cover most of the dry cake mix. Some people like to use more butter, but I only use 3/4 cup, what the original recipe calls for and it turns out perfect.
Be sure to look out for cherry pits – always check.
Thanks for stopping by!
Cheers!

Regarding black forest cobbler – instead of pouring melted butter on top can I use a spray butter instead?
Karen
Can this be halved and made into 2 smaller pans

Lenore…that sounds amazing!!!

A real Black Forest cake uses cherry kirsch liquor is used to soak the cherries. Am thinking about adding some to the pie filling. Will let you know how it works.

I’ve made an apple pie type version of this in the slow cooker. Would this also be a viable option?
